Tidy Cats® LightWeight 24/7 Performance Kitty Litter

The latest invention in kitty list

The new Tidy Cats® LightWeight 24/7 Performance® could very well be the best invention since well, the invention of the original kitty litter back in the 1940s.

It’s a difficult product to review because I am not, if you will pardon the expression, the end user, my cats are.

But as the person who has to clean up after them, my needs have always been something that doesn’t scatter too far from the litter box, doesn’t track easily throughout the house, clumps well and is easy to manage in terms of cleanup.

My cats, Fudge and Ziggy have never had any issues using a clay litter. So clay litter is what I have always bought. I have to admit that until now, the only drawback at been the weight of the largest jug. Consequently over the years, I have often paid more for the smaller sizes simply because they were easily to manage.

It seems I wasn’t alone.  In fact, a recent survey discovered that almost a third (27%) of cat owners dread carrying a new package of cat litter into the home due to its weight.. The new Tidy Cats® LightWeight 24/7 Performance®, is 50 percent lighter than traditional scooping cat litter. The new formula is a combination of clay and natural lightweight materials but still has excellent odor-neutralizing power. Further the jug has two handles making is much easier to only carry but to pour as well.

I slowly transitioned this new formula into the litter box until the box was completely stocked with the new formulation. Fudge and Ziggy never noticed the difference. That means success.

For a little bit of history, kitty litter was an accidental invention. The inventor, and the man who copyrighted the name kitty litter, Edward Lowe ran a business selling sand and granulated clay used to absorb oil and grease in factories and machine shops. And when his neighbor Kay Draper asked him to give her some clay for her cat box because she was tired of the wood ashes she used in the box being tracked through her home, Lowe realized that he was on to a good thing. In fact, in his autobiography, The Man Who Discovered The Golden Cat, Lowe credits his invention for making cats the world’s most beloved companion animals.

Personally I think cats themselves should take that credit but there’s no doubt his invention did have something to do with their appeal for being clean animals.

Tidy Cats® LightWeight 24/7 Performance Litter gets my “Must-Have” rating.

Distraction toys such as a Kong can provide additional hours of fun if you stuff it with Ultramix sweet potato or pumpkin puree and freeze the toy until the puree is solid. Be sure to give the stuffed Kong to your dog outside or somewhere where you won’t mind cleaning up the mess – if he doesn’t lick up everything for you! Peanut butter is another great option.
